Spencer's Theatre of Illusion

April 28-29, 2009
5th – 12th grades
Corsicana High School Auditorium

"Don't look for the stereotypical top hat and black cape of an old-time magician. The Spencers are young, attractive and hip 21st-century entertainers."

- The Dallas Morning News, TX

Walk away from the Spencers’ show and you’ll be surprised at what you hear. These masters of mystery never cease to amaze. Kevin and Cindy Spencer have mastered an elusive quality that elevates an ordinary performance into the realm of inspired awe. With charisma, their personalities travel beyond the stage lights to touch not only their viewers’ inquisitive minds, but their hearts as well.

“ They engage the audience,” says Magda de la-Puete, Business Manager of the Tennessee Williams Theatre in Key West , FL. “The audience laughs, cries, feels the suspense and, eventually, falls in love with this magical duet.”

For more than a decade, Kevin and Cindy Spencer have entertained audiences throughout the United States and around the world with one of the most successful touring illusion shows in the nation.

They have earned the reputation as one of the most highly regarded acts in magical entertainment and one of the most sought-after illusion teams in the business.

Their show, Theatre of Illusion, is much more than a magic show. It’s a powerful theatrical experience that you will never forget. What the Spencers create is “theatre” in the truest sense of the word.

You will cross over a threshold of disbelief only moments after the Spencers take the stage. Theirs is a place where artistry and theatre converge; where intellect and amazement collide; and where impossibility and inspiration are inseparable. Theatre of Illusion is a magical concert for your eyes!

By combining original theatrical elements with cutting-edge illusions, audience interaction, dramatic lighting, special effects, music, movement and stage magic, the Spencers have propelled the age-old art of magic into the 21st century.

Working with some of the leading creators and inventors in the magic industry, the Spencers feature illusions that are guaranteed to take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions – and keep you on the edge of your seat!
Is it possible for a woman to be folded inside a small 12” box?
Is it possible for a man to walk through the whirling blades of an industrial fan?
Is it possible for a person to defy the laws of gravity?
Is it possible to escape from a water-filled container like the legendary Houdini?

And be prepared to experience the magic yourself because the Spencers don’t want you to just sit there and watch - they want you to participate!

Is it possible to know and reveal the thoughts of members of the audience?

Is it possible for a member of the audience to experience for themselves the “Spikes of Doom”?
You Won't Believe Your Eyes!

Mark Shelton - Percussion Workshop

May 4-8, 2009
Pre K - 4th grades
Artist will travel to the schools

Mark Shelton
performer, educator, innovator, composer, producer, & high energy entertainer

Mark Shelton leapt at the chance to play the snare drum in the elementary school band program in McNairy County, TN. It didn’t quite hit him about how many drums he might have to carry around in the future.

In his one-man show, Mark draws upon a background that includes classical, folk, pop, jazz, gospel, ethnic, and new music to create an engaging collage with wide audience appeal. Mark entertains (and educates) with a hip, fast-paced style, as he romps and stomps his way through an arsenal of percussion paraphernalia including marimba, doumbec, bones, bodhran, cajon, hammered dulcimer, Hang, and even some "body music."

While Visiting Artist at Wayne Community College and Coastal Carolina Community College, both in North Carolina, Mark honed his soloist skills performing at schools, concert halls, on television, and in churches. In 1984, he was a prizewinner in The National Association of Composers USA Young Performers Competition and in 1986 he co-founded the harp and percussion duo, TALEA, which premiered new works for this unique ensemble.

Mark has appeared as percussion soloist on dozens of occasions as an artist with the Young Audiences Arts in Education rosters in Dallas, Houston, and Beaumont, TX. He freelances in the Dallas area in a variety of musical settings including playing percussion regularly as part of the Calvary Church of Irving Worship Band. Mark has served as artistic director for the “world fusion” ensemble, Tin Roof Tango, since the group’s inception in 1987. Having taught instrumental music in junior high, high school, and college, Mark uses his instructional skills in clinics and workshops on a variety of levels. Currently, Mark teaches percussion at Christ For The Nations Institute in Dallas, TX. Whether it's Found Sound workshops for elementary students or a clinic on practice techniques for adults, Mark brings an entertaining style to his teaching.
